4th of July Event

The volunteer 4th of July committee is kicking off the 2010 Fireworks Fund Drive for the annual celebration in Yankton.  This year as in the past, the biggest event of the day will be the “shooting off” of the fireworks in the evening on Sunday, July 4 beginning around 10 p.m.  The fireworks will be discharged from the Mueller property on the Nebraska side due to the renovation construction underway on the Meridian Bridge.

If there should be bad weather or the conditions are such that the show needs to be postponed, the show will be held on Monday, July 5. If the show is to be postponed, an announcement will be made on radio stations KVHT, KYNT and WNAX.

The committee is looking for interested individuals to help coordinate this event for 2010 and form a fulltime committee to take on the event as an on-going project for the future.  While no one entity is responsible for this event, the volunteer group consists of individuals that solicit funding and in–kind support from various city departments, Yankton Area Arts, Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce, the VFW/American Legion and area businesses.   Parties interested in developing this group are encouraged to call (605) 660-1078 or (605) 668-5238.

The goal for 2010 is $12,000.  The City of Yankton is providing portable potty’s on Levee Street and in the parking lot near the east most shelters, along with funding to help fund part of the purchase of the fireworks.   4th of July “Donation Hats” will be distributed at locations around Yankton for consumers to contribute funds.  Fundraising buckets will be available at the Summer Band Concerts beginning June 2 for free will donations. Solicitation letters will be mailed to area businesses within the next week.  The committee is encouraging businesses and individuals to help support this event by contributing to the fund.   Please make checks out to the Fireworks Fund and send to PO Box 588, Yankton, SD 57078.

Again this year, the 4th of July Committee invites Yankton non-profit organizations to set up a booth in the late afternoon and be open until the fireworks show begins.  Booths can begin setting up at 5 p.m. and will be open by 6 p.m.  Persons from a non-profit organization are encouraged to call the Chamber, (605) 665-3636, for the guidelines of having a booth.

At 7:45 p.m. the annual July 4 Concert in the Park will be held in the amphitheater featuring the band “Go Figure”.  The band plays Rock-n-Roll and cover tunes and has received excellent feedback on past shows.  The concert will end just before the start of the fireworks display.

Help the 4th of July committee make the 2010 event another “must see” in the region.
