Meridian Trails System
The Meridian Trails system offers you over 30 miles of trails filled with scenic beauty and several historic sites. Travel along the trails throughout the city of Yankton and Lewis and Clark Lake area! All trails in the city are paved and lighted. Trails leading to the lake area and throughout the campgrounds are all paved and some sections are lighted. Trail maps are available at the Yankton Chamber and Visitors Center. The following are locations and descriptions of the trails:
Arboretum Trail - 1.4 miles, 8’ wide asphalt, flat grade on north half, incline on south half.
The Arboretum Trail follows the perimeter of the Yankton High School and Summit Activities Center located at 1801 Summit St.
Auld-Brokaw Trail - 2.75 miles, 10’ wide concrete (Trailhead near Yankton Chamber and Visitors Center to Summit Street), moderate grade with a few slopes exceeding five percent.
The Auld-Brokaw Trail parallels Marne Creek through the heart of Yankton.
Calumet Bluff Trail - .9 miles, 8’ wide primitive dirt surface, varied grade with some steep inclines.
This trail, which is located next to the Crofton Golf Course on Highway 121, is an “out and back” trail, meaning hikers will have to backtrack to the starting point making the total hike 1.8 miles.
Chalk Bluffs Multi-Use Trail - 4.1 miles, crushed asphalt surface, varied grade including moderate to fairly steep inclines.
This nature trail in the Gavins Point Section of the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area welcomes equestrian riders, hikers and mountain bikers.
Chief White Crane Trail - 1 mile, 9’ wide crushed asphalt surface, flat grade.
This trail travels throughout the Chief White Crane Recreation Area and connects to the Riverside Acres development along Deer Boulevard.
Corps of Discovery Welcome Center Nature Trail - 1.5 miles, primitive birding and hiking trail.
At the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center, located three miles south of Yankton on Highway 81, you will find a birding and hiking trail that circles the perimeter of the grounds.
Fantle Memorial Park Trail - 1 mile around perimeter of park with additional interior trails, perimeter is 6’ wide concrete, interior trails are 8’ wide asphalt, flat grade.
Memorial Park is located along Douglas Avenue and Mulberry Street between 19th Street and 21st Street.
Gavins Point Nature Trail - 1.2 miles, hiking trail, natural wood chip and dirt surface.
Winding through native woods, across meadows and past scenic overlooks, this trail, located in the Gavins Point Section of the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, will add interest and enjoyment to your Lewis and Clark Lake visit.
Highway 52 Trail - 3.14 miles, 8’ wide asphalt, flat with one moderate incline exceeding five percent.
Ride between Yankton and the Lewis and Clark Lake area on this trail, which parallels Highway 52 from West City Limits Road to the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.
James River Trail – 4.3 miles, 5’ wide, paved only one mile and flat from Rotary Park along East 7th Street, Highway 50, Ferdig Avenue and East 8th Street. The primitive and scenic trail continues from East 8th Street out to the James River and has various grades, including moderate to fairly steep inclines.
Lewis and Clark Lake Trail - 6.9 miles including loops, 8’ wide asphalt, flat grade.
This scenic trail winds from the Pierson Ranch Recreation Area and throughout the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area.
Majestic Bluffs Trail - .5 miles, 10’ wide concrete, flat grade.
This trail is located near the Majestic Bluffs living community at 2111 W. 11th St.
Miller Creek Trail - .75 miles, 10’ wide primitive dirt surface, varied grade to moderate inclines.
This nature hiking trail located in the Miller Creek area of the Nebraska Lewis & Clark Recreation Area offers a view of sites where Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery Expedition camped in 1804 and 1806.
South Shore Trail - 3.5 miles, 10’ wide primitive dirt surface, varied grade with moderate inclines.
This nature trail in the South Shore area of the Nebraska Lewis & Clark Recreation Area welcomes equestrian riders, hikers and mountain bikers.
Toe Road / Training Dike Trail - 2.9 miles, on-road trail, flat grade.
Travel on this on-road trail between Pierson Ranch Recreation Area and Chief White Crane Recreation Area.
Trailhead to Paddlewheel Point Trail - .4 miles, 10’ wide concrete, flat grade.
The Trailhead is located west of the Yankton Chamber and Visitors Center at 803 E. 4th St.
Trailhead to Riverside Park Trail - 1.5 miles, 10’ wide concrete from Trailhead near Yankton Chamber and Visitors Center to Riverside Park and 8’ wide asphalt in park, flat grade.
This section of the trail follows Marne Creek to the Missouri River and then meanders along the Missouri River through Riverside Park.
Westside Park to West City Limits Road Trail - .75 miles, 8’ wide asphalt, flat grade.
This section of the trail stretches from Westside Park, located at West 5th Street and Summit Street, to the western edge of Yankton.
